governor chris christie said about people who blame the media. >> we can complain about korvelg of the campaign. if you do that, you're losing. >> and ryan obviously didn't get the memo from the romney campaign adviser ed giveless pea. >> we have a no whining rule in boston about coverage in the media. >> blaming the media is apparently off the table for mitt romney. which is why the candidate is starting yet another strategy to try to get back into this game. salon.com reported about meetings between romney advisers who want the candidate to attack president obama as being weak on national security. according to the report, strategists refer to their new operation as the jimmy carter strategy. romney wants to link president obama to president carter by comparing the current events in libya to carter's issues with iran. the candidate telegraphed his new strategy in a "wall street journal" op-ed this weekend. the campaign says romney will give a major foreign policy speech this week. romney is taking his message to the air waves. >> i think they want to do their best to keep the

. this was chris christie's advice to the candidates yesterday. >> what you do is go out and be yourself. and people either like it or don't. if they don't, they are going to vote for somebody else. not a tragedy. no one dies. >> finally speaking of debates, there was a barn burner last night in massachusetts where scott brown and democratic challenger elizabeth warren faced off in a debate. moderated by nbc's david gregory. it was tense from the outset. >> if you're going to comment on my record, i would at least have you refer to it -- excuse me. i'm not a student in your classroom. please let me respond, okay? >> that was an echo of a quip brown used in 2010 when he told martha kwaurkly i'm not in your courtroom, i'm not a defendant. i the two fought over whether elizabeth warren used her native american heritage to gain employment advantage. >> i listed myself as native american. i was listed there. it's part of who i am. >> do you consider yourself a minority? >> i consider myself as having a native american background. that's what i said, that's what i am. >> is she a liar? is that

of managing expectations, the guy that has managed them in his own fashion is chris christie. i want to play a little chris christie sound doubling down on the fact that this is a big deal tomorrow night for mitt romney. >> this whole race will be turned upside down thursday morning. >> what are you doing, christie? for god sake's if romney fails to meet those heavy expectations he's going to lose the general election and the republican party and that's going to leave open 26 -- oh. >> setting aside for 2016, part of me applauds the fact that christie is saying what everybody believes which it's a proving ground for mitt romney. and some part of me believes maybe it would be good if mitt romney said you know what, tomorrow night is a big deal and there going to be some wins and losses and i want to deliver a powerful and specific message about what i want to offer and the path forward. >> you have to be able to do that. i think all that chris christie, all that was missing from the interview was a christie 2016 t-shirt. he's the worst surrogate ever. >> or maybe the best. >> i don't know. i

. >> and even chris christie, the keynote speen at republican convention, he said they've had a bad last week and they've got a lot of ground to cover now. he says, i'm quoting him, we had a bad week. if the election were going to be held tomorrow, that would be a problem but there's a lot of ground to cover in the next 42 days. i don't know how you put a good light on this one. >> well, it's going to be hard. listen, the republicans are running for cover. peggy noon is saying it's calamitous. former political director of the republican party in iowa said that if ryan wants to run after this campaign, he's going to have to get rid of the stench of mitt romney. i mean, these are things -- don't oeven to want say this, okay? all you have to do is repeat what the republicans are saying about mitt romney to understand just how devastating his mistakes have been. to understand the problems he's having in the campaign. by the way, i don't think that tape was taken out of context. i think what that tape did was provide a context for voters. voters understand now that the mitt romney behind closed do

position very clear on that and it has not changed. >> and what about what chris christie had to say the other day on "meet the press," told david gregory that on thursday morning it's going to be a new race, he said mitt romney's going to be standing on the same stage with the president and i'm telling you come thursday morning the entire narrative of this race is going to change? >> well, look, campaigns are very hard, there's a lot of -- of course, a lot of high stakes in the debates with governor christie i love his optimism. the governor feeds off that optimism. many members of the campaign continue to feed off it. i don't think any one moment will fundamentally alter this race. it's going to be close to the very end, we're preparing like it's going to be very close. i think the obama campaign is preparing like it's going to be very close and i think we're going to be in a very good position after this debate to go all the way to election day and be in a position to win. so that's where our focus remains. >> kitchen madden, good luck tomorrow night. we'll see you out there in de

chris christie did not get the memo his party sucks at this. >> it's the restart of the campaign and i think you will see the numbers move back in another direction and the whole race will turn upside down. >> what you are you doing? if romney fails to meet those heavy expectations, he's going to lose the general election and that's going to leave open 26 -- oh. the jersey is strong in this one. >> in political language the governor there was sandbagging. actually he was sandbagging. he should have been low balling, that's playing up the skills of the other guy claiming you have to chance. >>> we have talked about how some republicans seem to be running against a president who doesn't actually exist suggesting that president obama is some kind of foreigner with hidden plans to outlaw guns and bring european-style socialism to the u.s. of a. well, back in 2008 focus on the family, a hard right christian group, sent a memo to supporters about what 2012 would look like if obama was elected. well, first a prediction about the boy scouts of america. here they are. the boy scouts no longer e

yesterday, brooke, you heard over the weekend, chris christie saying that this race is going to be turned upside down that romney will have such a strong performance that it is going to be sort of a game changer. i asked kevin madden about that yesterday, and he said he doesn't think that the campaign doesn't think that one event, one moment during these debates is going to decide and determine everything. they just don't see it that way. they like christie's enthusiasm, they say they're feeding off of it, but they don't exactly agree with that assessment. brooke, we're all sort of looking to tomorrow night to be this big moment that is going to change everything and be a make or break moment. it may not turn out that way. it may be a draw. the candidates move on to the next debate and candy crowley gets her shot. >> i look forward to seeing candy crowley. to quote her, she said chris christie did not get the memo when it comes to downplaying expectations. we shall see, jim acosta. we shall see. quick reminder for all of us, tomorrow night, the big night, the president versus his challeng

expectations for the debate, new jersey governor chris christie continued to ramp them up on monday. >> it's a huge night. had a bad couple of weeks, and we want to turn this around, and if you want to turn it around, you've got to perform on the biggest stage. >> reporter: speaking of turning around, a slew of national polls have come out in the last couple of days all showing the same thing. mitt romney inching back up, only a few points behind, down anywhere from two to four points. what's interesting here about the numbers, savannah is, president obama's numbers sort of locked in place at 49. the fluidity is in mitt romney's number. >> chuck todd in denver this mornings thank you. >>> bill o'reilly is the host of "the o'riley factor" and author of the new book "killing camelot," in stores today. >> nice to see you. >> i've heard you say on your show polls don't really matter until after the debates which i take it to mean you do think these debates are incredibly important. >> from the very beginning i've said that because people don't really know who mitt romney is. the pressure is on
